Dojo Etiquette

The Dojo is the name for the room in which the karate training is carried out. Whilst in the Dojo a code of conduct must be followed by all karate students and strict rules followed. Some of the main do's and dont's whilst in the Dojo are as follows:

ALWAYS...........................

* Bow when entering and leaving the Dojo

* Address your instructor as 'Sensei'

* Address the senior students as 'Sempei'

* Say 'Oss' when given istructions or advice by your Sensei, this is a term of acknowledgement and confirmation that you have understood

* Say 'Oss' when bowing

* Line up quickly and in grade order. Look to your left to ensure you are correctly lined up, your Sensei should not have to line you up

* Show respect for higher grades

* Keep fingers and toe nails clean and short

* Keep your Gi (karate suit) clean and in good repair, remember you are representing the club at all times

* Ask your Sensei's permission before leaving the Dojo during a training session

* Kneel down and wait for Sensei to allow you to join the class if you have arrived late or have previously left the Dojo


NEVER.....................

* Talk during training when your Sensei is instructing

* Take a water break without Sensei's permission

* Dis-respect another student whatever the grade

* Wear jewellry during training

* Act carelessly or recklessly so as to risk causing injury to another student

*say 'I CAN'T'.


This list is by no means exhaustive but gives a general overview of the code of conduct which you are required to follow and the behaviour you are expected to display when in the Dojo.
